#89 - Reading Can Change Your Life

When I was in my early twenties I was going to college and working in a metal fabrication shop to pay for my living and school expenses. As I was trying to figure just what I would like to do for a career, I soon learned how to buy and sell steel and make a profit at it.

Some of the reading required for my schooling seemed very boring but I loved reading about history and past events. One day I came across a book named ‘My First Two Thousand Years’ (the Story of the Wandering Jew).
This was a fictional book about a Captain in the Roman army who handled the Crucifixion of Christ on Mount Calvary. Christ looked down at the Roman (Cartaphilus) and said , “ you shall tarry till I return”. As the story goes, he never grows a day older from that time and is destined to roam the earth until Christ returns.

Queen Isabella of Spain

This guy was able to gather enormous amounts of knowledge and could go anywhere and get invited to the highest levels of society. He spent time with Nero, the Crusaders, Genghis Khan, Ben Franklin, studied at all the major universities and learning centers around the world.

But the one thing that I was amazed by was he always traveled with gems, wherever he went he could get passage or wealth with the exchange of gems. At one point in the 1400’s he heard that Queen Isabella of Spain was selling her jewelry to finance a trip to the New World with a guy named Columbus. When he got to the auction, he noticed that the jewelry and gems that she was offering were things that he had owned 300 years before.

That did it! I will now be a gem merchant. Forget the steel, the big trucks, and the hauling. I’m going with a pocket full of gems and jumping on any mode of transportation, going to anywhere I want to go, and show these stones and look at their eyes and seeing the glow and using the techniques I learned when selling steel and making a living that I loved.

And it all started by reading a book.
