#78 - Act Like a Big Shot

I was traveling one time, appraising jewelry in Alaska and I stopped at a motel, it was the one that had the slogan, “We’ll leave the light on for you”.

Well, the young couple with a baby who was ahead of me in line wrote a check for the room. The clerk said that she couldn’t take the check because it had too low of a number. I think it was like 008 meaning that it was only the eighth check they had written on that account.

It appeared that the folks in the banking world must have done a study on checks that bounce and found that there was a higher probably of bounced checks that had low numbers. Well, from then on when I opened a new account I had the the check printers start with like 9000. Now when I wrote a check I was sure they thought that I was like General Motors. This was around 1985.

So even after that I paid attention to people writing me checks at our store, it made sense to me. I’m telling you “follow the money”

Now I shared this story with several people over the years and gave them my advice.

Wouldn’t you know it, fast forward to 2020 and I opened an account for the sole purpose of handling my medical needs. Payments to insurance companies, doctors and pharmacies. This way I could keep better track of my medical records for my taxes. Thing was I forgot to tell the check providers to start at a high number. 001 was my first check, I would mail in my check and it would get deposited and no problem. I thought with all this space age stuff this low number business didn’t matter anymore, I was up to #182 with no problem. Well, I had a credit card attached to my bank account that I would use at the Pharmacy and one day I didn’t have the card with me. I wrote them a check and guess what, their Telecheck Company said “don’t take the check.”

After some phone calls and investigating I was told that the number on my check was too low and I was a high risk, can you believe it? I didn’t even follow my own preaching and fell for the ole’ low number deal.

That won’t happen again, when I reorder my checks they are gonna go from #182 to 20183. I want to be listed on the stock exchange again just like General Motors.
