#56 - For Whom The Bell Tolls

At our store we are very busy, analyzing jewelry, appraisals, re-cutting stones, making jewelry, talking with clients and yes, answering phones.

Now it’s bad enough when all the telemarketers call, the investment companies, and people who call with questions, and yes, the phone rings and rings. So sometimes I talk to the phone, like yell and curse at the phone.

I grab my head between my hands and rock it back and forth saying “the bells the bells”

Then one day I thought to myself, "what if we came to work and the phone never rang?"

I think I might start to self-doubt myself. First, I might think did I pay the phone bill, did the electric go out or did the phones go bad?

I thought, "what if they never rang again? I might think there was a nuclear blast, is everyone gone? Why is it so silent, are we not loved anymore? Does anyone care?"

The more I thought about it I didn’t think the sound of the phone ringing was so bad.

I know I could do without the solicitation calls, but people calling with questions that seem trifle like; "How late are you open, do you repair rings, change batteries and what is a 1925 penny is worth?" All these questions might sound trivial, but each may have its own situation. Some people are older and need to get a driver, others are busy and need to plan their day. A lot of these call are the lifeline to the business we do.

So, I guess I need to be patient, as I was thinking about it, the silence could get to be louder than the bells.

I say let there be noise, let them ring, LET THE BELLS TOLL FOR ME.
