Over the years I have seen a lot of watches that they called Character Watches. On the face of the watch would be pictures of cartoon characters, politicians and even Jimmy Hoffa. These watches were made by companies like Lorus, Disney, or Invicta. The watches were inexpensive.
I own numerous Disney characters, Donald Duck, Mickey, Goofy also some politicians Spiro Agnew and Nixon. Western characters Gene Autry, John Wayne and musicians, Elvis, the Monkeys and yes, even Jimmy Hoffa. These watches were given or sold as promotional stunts to gain votes or promote movies. Most of them didn’t cost much so they were considered disposable and weren’t taken care of, so a lot of them didn’t survive the test of time. I used to see a lot more of them years ago than I now see so it isn’t surprising when I show one and the person is amazed that there ever was such a watch.
Some of these watches have hit amazing values.
- A 1939 Flash Gordon by Ingersoll can be up to $1,700.00.
- A 1939 Donald Duck $2,200.00.
- A number of watches Dick Tracey, Babe Ruth, Dale Evans, Captain Marvel, Goofy, and the Lone Ranger can all be $1,000.00 or more depending on the maker and condition.
- A 1934 Tom Mix by Ingersoll can fetch $4,000.00. I didn’t even know who this guy was, but I’m looking for him.
Tom Mix and Tony
But one of my most prized possessions is my Jimmy Hoffa watch.
Now one day I showed it to a client and he was amazed and said “Wow, where did you get this?”
I told him that I found Jimmy Hoffa, and I took it off his wrist, then I reburied him and for the life of me I can’t remember where.
The guy looked at me, and I could see that he didn't believe me, but he bought the watch anyway.
You know I just didn’t have the heart to tell him I had three more of them in my safe.
