#107 - Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

Christmas just passed and that part of our Jewelry store season is over. That is a relief to our store and many others.

My most major concern with this time of the year is did I finish everyone’s job and finish it on time. This is always a serious issue and I sometimes lose sleep over it. I know that this year all went well but it hasn’t always been that way.

I thought back to a stressful time of Christmas Past.

I was living in Honolulu and was working on a ring for a client in Anchorage, Alaska. It wasn’t terribly expensive, it just needed to be finished and delivered on time.

This was in the eighties when your overnight deliveries took a few days, especially leaving Honolulu that was in the middle of a large pond, and going to Anchorage that was in the middle of a snow bowl.

The ring was finished later than I had hoped, and it was quite evident that it could not be sent and arrive on time.

Now, this client Mary, I knew that I could explain, and she would be disappointed, but would understand.

That was unacceptable to me.

I got to thinking, “there is a couple of direct flights from Honolulu to Anchorage” Yea, right down the Nimitz Hwy. I had flown there many times. I got into my car and went to the Honolulu Airport. Went to the boarding area and looked around. These were long before all the High Security measures that are in place today.

I found a stately looking man and asked him if he was on this flight. “Yes”, he said. I showed him the ring and told him my story. He was happy to help me. He took Mary’s name and phone number and told me he would take care of it. He was a foreign consulate from Finland. About 9 hours later I received a call form Mary and she had received her ring.

I was so happy and proud of myself, but I was more proud to know that an average everyday encounter can restore your faith in the human race. Most people will help you when and if you need it.

There are a lot more good people than bad.

For me, in my mind, that makes for a Happy New year.
